The ReFound Collective of artists work in a variety of disciplines and media, transforming ‘found’ unwanted furniture and other bits and bobs, into unique, yet functional, artworks. The resulting works are then sold via a series of pop-up shop events around Belfast.

The project was (re)founded by Jill O’Neill:

“Attracted by the journey of ordinary objects from person to person over a number of years and variety of homes, I was inspired to create a space where these objects gained new life as part of the next stage of their journey.

And so I set about collecting artists to help these unwanted, past-their-prime-pieces on their way to a more desirable life.”

The website is well worth a look at www.refoundonline.com

An Gailearaí in Co Donegal is urging visual artists from across Ireland to submit their work to a new all-island competition which has just been launched. “Ciall” aims to capture a sense of the Gaeltacht through visual art, says director Una Campbell but is not aimed exclusively at Irish speakers or those who live in the Gaeltacht.

“The notion of a Gaeltacht “sensibility” is well explored in literature, song, dance, poetry, drama, and film but this has not really been done within the visual arts. If you are a visual artist, what does it mean to be from the Gaeltacht or to have a connection with it? Can you express this connection through your art? Does a “sense” of the Gaeltacht influence or inform contemporary visual art practices?”

Campbell says An Gailearaí is seeking to get people talking about these issues as well as encouraging artists to submit their work. Entries close on 25th February.

For details see http://www.angailearai.com

Venue: Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast
Time: 930am-430pm
Cost: FREE

The next SHOWCASE is presented in association with CultureNorthernIreland.org and takes place at the Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast on Tuesday, March 22nd.

The theme of the day is entrepreneurship and new business models in the cultural industries.

For the first half of the day we’ll be hearing from exciting startup companies and entrepreneurs that are breaking new ground and experimenting with exciting new ideas in everything from cultural tourism to events and digital media to cultural retail. This will be followed in the afternoon with presentations and ‘hands on’ workshops featuring established organisations that are breaking new ground, introducing new technologies and developing new business models in everything from museums to festivals.

If you’re interested in the future of the cultural industries in Northern Ireland (and fancy a peek at some exciting new ideas) this is the place to be.
